PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – July 2024

Staying physically active is critical to ‘successful aging’

We have not yet received approval to bring Leon Mann’s weekly exercise classes to PKS.

Mayor Brodman agreed to follow up with Chief Ryan to confirm the status of the request of an ‘informed consent’ document and if there is anything we can do to make it a reality.

We reminded ourselves of the variety of alternative area activities available to all including, but not limited to:

    • Morehead City Marlins Home Games at Big Rock Stadium. Visit mhcmarlins.com for a full schedule and to buy tickets, or call 252-269-9767 for more information. Do we want to organize a game evening for the group?
    • Cornhole action at 34º North of Cedar Point every Tuesday, 6-10 pm, at 1106 Cedar Point Boulevard.
    • Visit Fort Macon. In addition to cannon firings on announced days, Park Rangers organize hikes explaining the flora and fauna found at the park. Check the website for specifics.
    • Check the PKS Aquarium website for outdoor adventures including kayaking events.
    • The Leon Mann Center has a very nice exercise room free and open to all.
    • St. Francis by the Sea also has an exercise room; check for the hours. Robin Smith will check with St. Francis by the Sea regarding guided labyrinth experiences.

    Raise Awareness

Efforts to raise awareness of the Council within the community continue:

    • Contact with local churches still need development. Kathy Driver volunteered to speak to the Bogue Banks Baptist church.
    • I will contact Parks and Rec.
    • The Library and Spoondrift have been given brochures. I will follow up with both.
    • Ike Pipkin will connect with the Board of Commissioners.

    Community Forums

Our next Forum will be on funeral plans – what to be prepared for. John Clarke and Mike Dilauro are organizing this August’s talk.

John/Mike: We must advertise 2 to 4 weeks prior to the forum to ensure larger audiences.

Consider posting a ‘Save the Date’ reminder now in addition to our Facebook and the Shoreline (depending on timing).

Advertising in the Town’s Stay in the Know should widen our reach.

What else could we be doing to increase awareness of the Council?

    New Business

    Gathering Places

John Macheca will update us on the development of ‘Gathering Places.’ These include the Crystal Coast Oceanfront Resort and Trinity Center.

    PKS Strategic Plan

John Brodman and Michelle Phillips will update us on the PKS Strategic Plan.

The Plan has been in development for some time and is being disseminated to Town Groups for comment.

It is a very thoughtful document that describes the considerations the group has been researching and learning from focused discussions. In preparation for their presentation, I recommend you take a look at the Plan and the Appendices that appear on the Town of PKS website.

    Business Cards

Our business cards are ready. I’ll bring them to our next meeting.

If anyone would like them before then, please let me know.

    Aging in the News

Lastly, the group was asked to spend a few moments reflecting on the ongoing dialogue currently on every news channel about aging:

    • Pay attention to the language used to describe aging individuals.
    • The expectations we have of those who are 70+.
    • How are ‘acceptable behaviors,’ and ‘problematic behaviors’ described, and how do these behaviors impact the perceptions of seniors, etc.

Should we change the dialogue? Can we change it? What should we be focused on? Please share your thoughts.

    Agenda

    Ongoing Business

Objective: Bringing exercise classes to PKS from Leon Mann.

Activities to transport to PKS from Leon Mann under discussion include but are not limited to:

    • Tai chi for arthritis and fall prevention.
    • Other fitness classes: Arthritis foundation exercise program.
    • Floor yoga.
    • Chair yoga.

Location for classes: Town Hall – Betty Carr room, the Library’s meeting room, the 2nd floor of the Safety Building.

    • Options depend on size of class, ease of reserving the area, approvals.
    • Is transportation to Leon Mann once a week possible/necessary?
    • What’s the hold up? Attorney’s sign off on a consent form.

Objective: Grow our awareness/build a broader awareness base.

Please share your experience targeting local churches with information about the Council. Please insert an announcement in your church bulletin, speak to your minister/pastor/priest/rabbi letting him know who we are. Take brochures and talking points. Sign up. Let me know which churches you will be speaking to.

    • John Clarke and John Macheca signed up for St. Francis in June.
    • We need to broaden this list.

    PKS meetings:

    • Strategic Planning – Bill Douglass for June.
    • Appearance Committee – Ann Bures in May.
    • Planning Board – Michelle Powers in May.
    • Board of Commissioners – Ike Pipkin.

We still need someone to speak with Parks and Recreation.

    Other Business

When is our next forum? What is the topic? Who will be speaking?

What else could we be doing to increase awareness of the Council?

Business cards will be available at our next meeting.

  • PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – May 2024

PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – May 2024

Follow up from our tour of the Leon Mann Center

All were impressed and surprised at the number of activities, the facilities, and the energy of the Leon Mann Center.

Based on the positive experience, I met with Center Director Keisha Williams and Fitness Director Kaylee Wolf about bringing exercise activities to Pine Knoll Shores on a weekly basis.

A four-step plan was outlined for getting individuals to the Leon Mann Center on May 29 for the Health and Fitness Day to experience the type of class that could ‘travel’ to PKS.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get clearance from the Town to pursue this option so we didn’t broadly advertise it.

Council members interested in attending on their own were emailed reminders of the Health and Fitness Day and, hopefully, several attended.

I remain optimistic this initiative will ultimately be successful. I’ll keep you posted.

To grow our awareness/build a broader awareness base, all were asked to reach out to their local church and tell them about us.

This can be done by placing an announcement in your church bulletins and/or speaking to your minister/pastor/priest/rabbi letting him know who we are.

Our brochures and talking points were distributed to all. All were asked to put their name, church and contact month on a sign-up sheet.

John Clarke and John Macheca both signed up for St. Francis. Thank you!

I would love to see this list expanded.

    Awareness

To grow our awareness/build a broader awareness base, all were asked to reach out to each regularly scheduled town meeting group: Parks and Recreation Meeting, Strategic Planning Committee, Appearance Commission, and Planning Board.

Meeting schedules, times and locations are below. All were asked to put their name and contact month on a sign-up sheet.

    • One-two individuals should be at Town Hall/Safety Building at least 15-20 minutes before each meeting to greet participants and local citizens, hand out a COA brochure, ask what they would like us to focus on in the next 9 to 12 months, and invite to a meeting. OK to leave once the meeting gets started.
    • Each Council person should have brochures and talking points.
    • Report what you learned at the next COA meeting.

Thanks to ALL who signed up!

    • Bill Douglas – Strategic Planning in June
    • Ann Bures – Appearance Committee in May
    • Michelle Powers – Planning Board in May
    • Ike Pipkin – Board of Commissioners
    • Parks and Rec still needs a volunteer.

It was suggested that we also have a presence for events where there are many attendees, e.g., on Election Day, the PKA HOA Annual meeting, and at book clubs anyone is a member of. Let me know of your interest.

    New Business

    Ideas for future forums

Status of local economic development, funeral preparations, assisted living options including memory care, estate planning, veterans’ services, dating options for seniors. Feel free to add ideas.

    Facebook Group

Our Facebook entry is undergoing some changes to make it a bit more professional and interesting.

    Community Research

Residents are being encouraged to participate in the research being conducted by KC Busch on Resilience: How Towns Make Decisions.

Contact the Strategic Planning Committee if you are interested in knowing more.

    Business Cards

Most members preferred a simple style business card for the group. Cards will distributed at the next meeting.

    Agenda

Everyone was impressed and pleasantly surprised by the range of activities, facilities, and the vibrant atmosphere at the Leon Mann Center.

Following this positive experience, I met with Center Director Keisha Williams and Fitness Director Kaylee Wolf to discuss the possibility of bringing exercise activities to Pine Knoll Shores on a weekly basis.

Is this what we want to do?

    Recommendations

If yes, this is a suggested plan:

Step 1 – meet with Julie A. and John B. to get sign off on bringing exercise classes to PKS.

Step 2 – get PKS residents familiar with the exercises that are available at the Leon Mann Center and can be offered at PKS. Encourage participation in National Senior Health and Fitness Day at the Center on May 29, 2024 from 9:15 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

For those who prefer not to drive to the Center, we can arrange a van to pick up individuals at Town Hall at 8:30 a.m. and return folks at the close of the activities.

Please let me or Ann Bures know if you would like this transportation.

Step 3 – confirm interest in specific classes which can ‘travel’, e.g., Tai Chi for Arthritis and Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, Chair Yoga, Silver Sneakers. Classes would be once a week on Thursdays 8 a.m. or 2 p.m.

There is no charge to participants or the town; donations to the Leon Mann Center are requested, but not required.

Step 4 – Secure space for these classes and commit to support these classes by promoting them to build regular attendance.

    New Business

To grow our awareness/build a broader awareness base, let’s reach out to local churches and tell them about us.

Please insert an announcement in your church bulletin, speak to your minister/pastor/priest/rabbi letting him know who we are. Take brochures and talking points. Sign up; Let me know which churches you will be speaking to.

To grow our awareness/build a broader awareness base, let’s also reach out to each group at the beginning of their town meetings: Parks and Recreation Meeting, Strategic Planning Committee, Appearance Commission, and Planning Board.

Meeting schedules, times and locations are below. Sign up.

    • One-two individuals should be at Town Hall/Safety Building at least 15-20 minutes before each meeting to greet participants, hand out a COA brochure, ask what they would like us to focus on in the next 9 to 12 months, and invite to a meeting. OK to leave once the meeting gets started.
    • Each Council person should have brochures and talking points.
    • Report what you learned at the next COA meeting.

Should we have a corresponding secretary? Comments? Thoughts?

The June meeting has been cancelled; there are no minutes.

  • PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – April 2024

PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – April 2024

The April 2024 meeting was held at the Leon Mann Jr. Enrichment Center.

Nine members of the Council on Successful Aging met at the Center and were given a tour of the facility by Director Keisha Williams. For many, this was a first-time visit.

The building is a single level county facility operated for Carteret County citizens 50+, caregivers, and the community at large.

Activities emphasize health and wellness programming, featuring a fitness center, social events, computer instruction, and many other educational and recreational activities – all free.

For those 60+, a free nutrition program (lunch), home delivered meals, and transportation to and from the Center are available.

The large dining hall also serves as a venue for special seasonal, holiday events and seminars as well as monthly dances.

The facility includes a lending library, and dedicated bridge game, yoga, billiards, arts and crafts, and computer instruction work rooms.

    Staying independent is the key.

The group also stayed for lunch and discussions.

    Agenda: Ongoing Business

  • PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – February 2024

PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – February 2024

Here is a summary of current topics discussed at the PKS Council on Aging meeting on February 13, 2024.

Raising Awareness of PKS Council on Aging

In the upcoming year, our focus will be on increasing recognition of our brand, mission, and the services we provide.

    Club Speakers

Cindy will speak to the Women’s Club on March 16. Dates for the Garden Club (Michelle Powers agreed to speak), and History Club (Susan Phillips will speak) – and any group that would like a presentation – TBD.

Michelle and Susan were given brochures and talking points.

    Churches and Libraries

We will also reach out to local churches. I need to hear from you which ones may be interested.

Cindy will speak to the BB Branch Manager, Danijela Mitchell. At minimum we would like to display our brochure and post our meeting dates at the library entrance.

We are open to other ideas.

    Leon Mann Senior Center

There are opportunities to partner with Leon Mann.

The Senior Lifestyle Expo will be held at Leon Mann on May 17. I hope to have a table at this event. Anyone willing to attend with me is welcome.

Further, we can offer Arthritis Foundation Exercises and Tai Chi Classes once a week in PKS provided by the Center – if there is an interest and a location can be dedicated.

Let me know your thoughts. Specific dates/times are dependent on availability of Leon Mann staff.

    Town of PKS-Sponsored Activities

We have a presence in all town sponsored activities and plan to be visible in the hallways/lobbies with materials prior to town meetings.

I’d like a few of you to commit to setting up a table 3–4 times this year in Town Hall to greet Commissioners, Planning Board members, and other event attendees. We can review schedules to find workable dates.

We will continue to have brochures in key places, e.g., Town Hall, Hotel Alice, and Spoondrift Market.

We would also like to link our website with the Town’s website. The Town is exploring new vendors; once a decision is made, we can pursue this option.

    Forum Update for 2024

Next year, we hope to offer 2–3 times more forums than in 2023, covering a diverse range of topics.

The presentations will be recorded and made available on our website, Facebook, and YouTube.

Mike DiLauro and John Clarke will be responsible for expanding the topics, arranging speakers, promoting the dates, and recording presentations for online audiences.

Ann Bures has agreed to manage refreshments at the forums, with expenses reimbursed.

    Topics under consideration

    • Nutrition, medication safety, life documents – could also help frame dialogue with the hospital.
    • Medical insurance planning and coverage.
    • Estate planning.
    • I’m dead, now what? Preparing for the end.

Please let Mike, John, or Ann know of any topics you would like added.

    Resident Data Collection

A crucial aspect of the services we strive to deliver relies on data. This data should be gathered through a comprehensive survey of all residents.

I will continue to speak to stakeholders about this. Once we work out database details, I’d like to draft a more comprehensive survey than last time, exploring the “quality of life in PKS.”

    Wrap Up

This will be an active year and I am hopeful all will find ways to participate.

If you have additional ideas to explore, please voice them. We grow with new ideas and collaboration.

    Agenda

I would like to continue the discussion from our January 9, 2024 meeting.

    Outreach

Raising our awareness in the community.

    • We will be presenting to local Town organizations – Women’s Club, Garden Club, and History Club. Others?
    • I’d like to have a presence at local Town meetings – e.g., Strategic Planning, BOC.
    • I’d like to reach out to local churches – suggestions?
    • The Library indicated interest in working with us.
    • What could we do with the Leon Mann Center?
    • Our forum offerings.
    • Other communication channels?
    • Other ideas?
    • Volunteers?

    Forums

The number of forums will be expanded this year. Mike DiLauro and John Clarke are working to line up topics/speakers and videotape sessions.

    • Ideas for topics? Presenters?
    • Volunteers? Of special interest is a volunteer to oversee audience refreshments; you will be reimbursed.

    Initiatives

Checking in on the development of our current initiatives: What is our next step? What do you need to take the next step?

    • Gathering Places, Lists of Service People and Medical Professionals, Transportation Issues, Food Security–Meal Delivery, and developing a dialogue with the Hospital.

    Additional Topics

What else should we consider working on? Why? Proof of need?

    Do we need another survey?

I’m hopeful everyone is willing to contribute to the discussion. The emphasis should focus on Goals/Messages and Next Steps. This may mean trimming our list of initiatives and adding new ones. Let’s see where the discussions take us.

  • PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – January 2024

PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – January 2024

Here is a summary of current topics discussed at the PKS Council on Aging meeting on January 9, 2024.

    Community Outreach

Emphasis in the coming year will be on raising awareness of our name, vision, and what we can offer.

    • We will be speaking to the Women’s Club, the Garden Club, and History Club – and any group that would like a presentation.
    • Michelle Powers agreed to speak to the Garden Club; Susan Phillips will speak to the History Club; Cindy Schersching will speak to the Women’s Club.
    • We will also reach out to local churches.
    • The Library has indicated an interest in partnering with us; at minimum we would like to display our brochure.
    • There may be opportunities with Leon Mann TBD.
    • We have a presence in all town sponsored activities and plan to be visible in the hallways/lobbies with materials prior to town meetings.
    • We will continue to have brochures in key places, e.g., Town Hall, Hotel Alice, and Spoondrift Market.
    • We would also like to link our website with the Town’s website.

    Forums for 2024

The number of forums offered will be 2–3 times greater than 2023. They will cover a wide variety of topics. The presentations will be videotaped and available on our website, on Facebook, and on YouTube.

Mike DiLauro and John Clarke will oversee the expansion of topics, line up speakers, advertise the dates, and videotape the presentations for our website, Facebook, and YouTube.

    • We are looking for a third individual to volunteer to take care of refreshments for each session. Expenses will be reimbursed.
    • Topics being considered include: Nutrition, medication safety, life documents (these could also help frame dialogue with the hospital); medical insurance planning and coverage; estate planning; “I’m dead, now what? Preparing for the end.”

    Resident Data Collection

A key strength to the services we are working hard to provide depends on data. The data should be obtained from surveying a comprehensive listing of all residents.

I would like to create a master database of every household in PKS with codes that describe the household’s characteristics, e.g., full and part-time residents, families with children under 18, retired vs. still working, etc.

Residents would be asked to respond to different surveys throughout the year.

    • We will need help from the Town to accomplish this.
    • Once we work out database details, I’d like to draft a more comprehensive survey than we did the first time. We will explore the “quality of life in PKS.”

This will be an active year and I am hopeful all will find ways to participate.

If you have additional ideas to explore, please voice them. We grow with new ideas and collaboration.

    Agenda

We had Jason Baker, our Fire/EMS Chief, speak to us in December. Given the value and depth of his knowledge, he kept us engaged throughout the meeting and we didn’t attend to any other items.

Since it is the beginning of the new year, it seems like an appropriate time for us to review our past efforts and talk through ideas for this coming year.

I would like to talk through each initiative in some detail…but keep the discussion of each initiative to no more than 30 minutes. We likely won’t get through the entire list, and it’s OK if it spills into our February meeting.

I’m hopeful everyone is willing to contribute to the discussion. The emphasis should focus on Goals/Messages and Next Steps. This may mean trimming our list of initiatives and adding new ones. Let’s see where the discussions take us.

Currently, we are working on Gathering Places, Lists of Service People and Medical Professionals, Transportation Issues, Forums/Education, Food Security–Meal Delivery, and opening a dialogue with the Hospital.

  • PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – December 2023

PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – December 2023

The group discussion covered a variety of current topics on December 12, 2023. Here is a summary.

Jason Baker, Chief of PKS Fire & EMS

We had a special speaker: Jason Baker, PKS Fire/EMS Chief. Jason spoke to his experience and thoughts on how we might open a dialogue with Carteret Hospital.

This initiative is driven by the comments from our original survey in 2022 that the hospital did not adequately meet the needs of the community and the belief that a community hospital should give the community a voice.

    Hospital Dialogue

Chief Baker’s talk suggests (to me) that we may be able to open a dialogue with Carteret Hospital with:

    • A request for the funding and staffing of an emergency dialysis treatment center in addition to the current dialysis center.
    • An offer to create a workshop/series of workshops on what it means to be a “good patient.”
    • Better understanding of what is expected when we call 911 so paramedics can assess history and determine needed treatments.
    • This is particularly important in emergencies, but applies anytime we interface with medical professionals.

    Chief Baker’s comments/observations

    • Dialysis is necessary if the body retains too much or has too little potassium; these conditions require emergency treatment.
    • A recent protocol change may divert some dialysis patients on ambulances to CarolinaEast if dialysis may be required during their stay.
    • If Carteret General had these capabilities, an ambulance wouldn’t be taken out of service for transport to New Bern.
    • Carteret’s facility has a dialysis center, but emergency dialysis patients are sent to the nearest facility (New Bern); only inpatients use the in-house center.
    • When a patient is sent to New Bern by ambulance, that vehicle is out of service for several hours—at least twice every six months—leaving PKS vulnerable.
    • For heart catheter needs, EMS can call helicopter transport to Wilmington or Greenville trauma centers; no ambulance is taken out of the area.
    • Emergency-room dialysis equipment is expensive; there are no known plans to invest in it.

    Medical Advocate at the Hospital

Having an advocate with you at the hospital, especially in an emergency, is highly recommended. Ideally this is a family member or someone who knows your condition and medications.

The advocate should have a phone and serve as a second set of ears to hear what the doctor says.

    • Help establish a routine at home for taking the right medication at the right times and reiterate follow-up details.
    • Be free to question the doctor on your behalf.
    • Carry legal documents stating your wishes, or entrust them to your advocate.

Be very clear on the reasons for the emergency call. Describe symptoms and what you were doing prior to dialing 911.

    Medication preparation

You will be asked about medication names, dosages, and frequencies. Timely, correct medication information impacts treatment success.

    • List allergies and related medications with frequency.
    • Report hypertension even if controlled; note your blood pressure medication.
    • Report diabetes and medications.
    • Stroke/heart attack outcomes are time-sensitive; PKS leadership is confident in local ER response.
    • Don’t hand EMS a bag of medicines—keep a current list with names, dosages, and frequencies.

The PKS EMS team is highly trained and engaged in ongoing education. Their talent and responsiveness provide confidence throughout the community.

    Agenda

    Presentation Forums

Mike: Should we do another? What topics should we pursue? When? Who do we ask? Can we schedule 3–4 topics for 2024?

Home and Medical Service Providers List

Creating a list of outstanding home service providers and medical personnel was a central commitment. Let’s continue to grow the list and include feedback from anyone who has used it.

    • Some of you were given folders with blank forms for you/your neighbors. Please bring the completed forms (and folders) to this meeting.
    • No personal questions are asked; names won’t be printed; a form isn’t required if you can share the info clearly.

    Carteret Hospital

Establishing a relationship with Carteret Hospital: a community hospital should give the community a voice. To build on the conversation, can we answer these questions?

    • Which physician specialties are missing or underrepresented?
    • How many physicians of those specialties are in the area now, and how many are needed?
    • Follow EMS lead: Chief Jason Baker and team can suggest ways to improve ER care quality.
  • PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – October 2023

PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – October 2023

The group discussion covered a variety of current topics on October 10, 2023. Here is a summary.

Updates and feedback on current initiatives

Feedback on the September forum re: Hospice House.

    • Should we do another?
    • What topics should we pursue? When?
    • Who do we ask?

Thank you, John and Anne, for videotaping the forum. Please send me a copy of the video so we can put it on the website. Will you put it on Facebook?

Home and Medical Service Providers List

Creating a list of outstanding home service providers and medical personnel was a central commitment when we first got together.

It was determined that we had more resources than we realized and the community needed reminding.

The list is based on our collective experiences with service and medical professionals.

We need to grow our list of references/recommendations. All were asked to contribute.

    • Some of you were given folders with forms to be filled out by you/your neighbor re: home service providers and medical professionals. Please bring the completed forms—and the folders—to this meeting. I have another set of blank forms for four more people to take to neighbors to fill out.
    • The task is not a difficult one. We are not asking personal questions and you don’t even need to sign them. Your names will not be printed on the document. You don’t even need a form.

Establishing a relationship with Carteret Hospital

We are still looking for an opening for the discussion with the hospital so that we might add the voice of the community into the community hospital.

In the beginning, a common comment about barriers to living in Carteret County was the lack of medical specialists necessary to age in place. We had Virginia Cuttrell and Dr. Brooks speak to us about the hiring process.

I’ve maintained the conversation with the hospital in the belief a community hospital should give the community a voice. To build on the conversation, I asked you these questions:

    1. What physician specialties do you believe are not available or are not well represented in our area? In other words, what are we missing?
    2. In the specialty areas you have identified in Q1, how many medical MDs of this type do you believe are in the area (could be zero), and how many are needed for you to feel you are well taken care of?

From conversations with Ms. Cuttrell, it is clear that we need to agree on our position/request before we approach the hospital again.

    Possible approaches

There are several possible approaches to initiate a dialogue including, but not limited to:

    • The Dept. of Health and Human Services has completed a needs study across the county. Summary findings suggest seniors want the same things as PKS seniors, e.g., age in place in their own homes, stay engaged socially, have transportation, etc.
    • The County’s Strategic plan acknowledges the anticipated population growth and the aging of the population. Issues that will be affected include insurance options.
    • Let’s focus on what we do have, e.g., dialysis centers, cancer treatments, and promote these services.
    • Mayor Brodman suggested speaking with the PKS emergency care professionals for their perspective on what is missing in terms of care/specialists in the county.
    • Explore how part timers get medical care when they are here.
    • Several physicians are retiring. This puts more pressure on recruitment efforts. Some physicians are bringing family members into their practices.
    • Have a discussion with your own primary care physician for any ideas they have about recruitment/what is lacking.

    Food Drive

St. Francis by the Sea is having a food drive for Martha’s Mission during the lobster fest. You can pick up your lobster order and drop off canned goods at the same time.

    Spoondrift Fall Festival

Spoondrift Market is hosting a Fall Festival with the help of the Police and Fire Depts.

It’s a time to meet your neighbors and their families, and enjoy the great fall weather.

The PKS Council on Aging will have a spot on the lawn between the Safety Building and Spoondrift.

    Neighbors in Need

The COA was made aware of the meal needs of a resident who is home-bound. Her neighbor has been providing regular meals, but the neighbor was now moving to Beaufort.

Our partnership with Robin Smith with St. Francis by the Sea is following up on what can be provided.

    Driver Services for Non-driving Residents

Mike Blawag on Beechwood volunteered to be a driver to local doctor’s appointments, grocery stores, RX pick up, etc.

If anyone is in need of transportation, please call 919-422-6090. Let him know you are part of the COA. PS: I would believe he would take a tip for gasoline.

    Agenda

To inform our position, it is suggested we may want to talk to these sources:

    • Identify physicians in PKS who we may speak to
    • Contact the Health Department for input
    • Talk with Hospice doctors
    • Reach out to the PKS paramedics for insight; John B agreed to follow this up
    • The United Way of Coastal Carolina was mentioned as a possible resource.
    • Others?

Anne Bures and I will sift through options, check assumptions with you, and present a position to the group for follow up.

  • PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – September 2023

PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – September 2023

The initial discussion was around THE LIST of service and medical professionals.

Four individuals were given folders to take to their neighbors to broaden our input. All were asked to fill out the forms and request this information from their neighbors.

The remainder of the meeting included a review of previous topics.

    Hospice Community Forum

The community forum is on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Town Hall. Kay Coole, director of the Crystal Coast Hospice House, will update us on the services and care Hospice provides. She will also discuss volunteer opportunities.

John and Anne Clarke will video the presentation for viewing on our FB and website.

    Hotel Alice Meet and Greet

Hotel Alice hosted a meet and greet on September 13, 2023 for all of PKS. It was well attended.

The Hotel is building their presence in the community and are frequently completely full. They are also undertaking major upgrades (all new mattresses, new furniture, improved bar service, etc.) to enhance their customers’ experience.

Hotel Alice continues to host food trucks for a variety of eating out options. When we are aware of the schedule, we post the planned visits on our FB page.

    Carteret Hospital Resources

Much of this meeting was spent talking about possible approaches to the Carteret Hospital.

The group believes that the community needs more, specific physician specialties; the hospital makes decisions regarding recruitment based on numbers.

Our goal: To put a community voice into the recruitment process.

Virginia Cuttrell – one of the speakers from the hospital last year – is in charge of recruitment.

In a recent dialogue with her, it was clear that we need to agree on our position/request before we approach the hospital again.

To inform our position, these approaches were mentioned:

    • Identify physicians in PKS who we may speak to.
    • Contact the Health Department for input.
    • Talk with Hospice doctors.
    • Reach out to the PKS paramedics for insight; John B agreed to follow this up.
    • The United Way of Coastal Carolina was mentioned as a possible resource.

Anne Bures and I will shift through options, check assumptions with you, and present a position to the group for follow up.

  • PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – August 2023

PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – August 2023

Today’s meeting was informal, spirited, and focused on updating our activities to date. It’s been a busy month.

    Hotel Meet and Greet

Hotel Alice is hosting a meet and greet on August 13, 2023 for all of PKS.

Announcements were posted around the area thanks largely to John and Jean Macheca and our FB page.

Specialty drinks will be offered as well as charcuterie boards and snacks. Two bartenders will be on hand to serve the crowd. We sincerely appreciate the outreach the Hotel is making to our community.

    Hotel Alice Local’s Discount

Hotel Alice is offering a 15% discount on rooms if callers mention “PKS” when they call. The Hotel is one of the best choices for our friends and relatives when they visit here.

    Food Trucks in PKS

Hotel Alice also hosts food trucks for a variety of eating out options. We post the planned visits on our FB page. An accompanying margarita is often recommended and prepared at a discount price at the Hoffman Bar.

    Spoondrift Market Extends Hours

Spoondrift Market’s popularity has grown quickly and hours now extend to Saturday. Their special wine tasting evenings have gained a following.

    Connecting Spots

John Macheca continues to lead our group’s efforts to establish nearby connecting spots for PKS. The Inn at Pine Knoll Shores will be approached and the Trinity Center will be scouted out as possible locations.

Join the PKS Town Mailing List

Leslie Yarbrough, our Public Safety Admin, is now compiling and emailing weekly listings of Upcoming Happenings in Pine Knoll Shores.

If you are not on her email list, you can sign up on the town’s website or directly with her by calling 252-247-2268 ext. 10 or emailing [email protected]. Stay in the know! We post these listings on our Facebook page.

Service Provider and Medical Personnel Lists Now Available

Paper copies of our lists of Service Providers and Medical Personnel are available in the lobby of Town Hall.

At the meeting, four members were given folders with forms to be passed to neighbors for their input to these lists.

It’s a great way to meet your neighbor and involve them in a service that will also benefit them when they have a home maintenance or medical need.

The list will be updated and expanded over time. The format is being revised so that it will easily be read on our website whether you view it on your computer or on your phone.

    PKS Transportation

Karen Murphy heads our Transportation initiative.

We are currently recruiting for volunteers willing to take residents to local doctor’s appointments, pick up prescriptions, and help with grocery errands. These trips may include medical appointments in New Bern.

If volunteers are not available, there are low-cost options that we can recommend.

    Carteret County Concierge

The group was made aware of a new business serving our county: Carteret County Concierge.

In addition to providing additional transportation options, this group offers a variety of services including help with personal storm preparation, property services, gift/party planning, home/pet monitoring, vacation planning, and senior companionship.

Each service is designed and priced to meet individual needs. Call Cindy Blizzard at 252-342-4392 for schedules and quotes. This notice also appears on our Facebook page.

    Hospice Community Forum

Mike Dilauro has scheduled our next community forum for Thursday, August 28, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Town Hall.

Kay Coole, interim director of the Crystal Coast Hospice House, will update us on the services and care Hospice provides. She will also discuss volunteer opportunities.

You can watch the entire presentation below:

    COA Website Updates

Lastly, website 2.0 was launched this month.

The website has a new design and organization as well as additional content.

It is now linked with our FB group page, and provides opportunities to send us suggestions and ask questions.

Features will continue to be enhanced for ease of navigation and communication. It is also the subject of next month’s Shoreline article.

Members were encouraged to continue to spread the word that these tools are available.

  • PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – July 2023

PKS Council on Aging Meeting Minutes – July 2023

The objectives for the July meeting were similar to that from June: I was looking for some good discussion around the initiatives we have been working on.

The initiatives are the tactics that contribute to the big picture and each initiative has specific goals that need to be articulated.

Since we weren’t able to cover everything in one meeting, the conversation carried over into this July meeting.

We reviewed the decisions made and steps forward from our last meeting for these initiatives:

Gathering Places (John M.), The List (Cindy S.), and Transportation (Karen M.). Amy Novick from the Hotel Alice and Marion Goetzinger representing Spoondrift Market were present and key to the discussion on Gathering Places. Both venues have been actively engaging the community.

    Hotel Alice

Hotel Alice has established itself as a unique destination place embracing the history of Pine Knoll Shores while offering an iconic ocean side venue.

As Sales Director, Amy’s energy has drawn in special local activities (goat yoga, anyone?) and unique brews on tap from the Mill Whistle Brewery, Carteret County’s oldest and only Nano brewery.

We are very fortunate to have Hotel Alice partner with us and offer a safe, comfortable place to meet up as well as provide extended family a nearby destination place.

    Spoondrift

In a relatively short time, Spoondrift has seen their tables filled with local residents and out-of-towners enjoying locally roasted coffee from the Carolina Coffee Roasting Co while reviewing a varied selection of local crafts.

Merchandise includes artwork, jewelry, greeting card clothing, and specialty food items. A game table has been added while the comfortable lounge area allows quiet conversations.

We are excited by the warm reception Spoondrift has been given and look forward to growing with them.

    Local Service Providers

The initial list of service people and medical professionals has been created and will also appear on website/Facebook pages.

Paper copies will also be available at PKS Town Hall.

These are providers/agencies that council members have used and have been given the highest ratings based on their experiences. We will continue to expand this list.

Importantly, we ask for the community’s comments based on their personal experiences should they use any of these providers. A simple rating of 1 to 5 stars (5 being the highest) will let us know you agree (or not) with our assessment of the quality and professionalism of these agencies.

All additional comments are also welcomed. This feedback is valuable.

    Local Transportation Options

Karen Murphy heads our Transportation initiative. We have a list a list of agencies that provide transportation for a fee, but we would also like to have a list of volunteers (they don’t have to be PKS Council members) who would be willing to:

    • Take residents in need of a ride to a local doctor’s appointment (no further than New Bern)
    • Pick up medication at a local pharmacy
    • Do light grocery shopping.

Anyone learning of a need for this service should notify Karen. Karen will reach out to our volunteers. Ideally, we would have 3–4 persons willing to provide this service. Please give Karen your name and contact information if you are willing/interested in participating.

    Thank you!

    Topics Not Covered

Time did not permit in-depth conversations on the remaining initiatives: Forums/Education (Mike D.), Food Security (Robin/Terry S., Linda C.), Carteret Hospital (Cindy S., Anne B.).

They will be covered in our August meeting.

    Website Re-design

In the time remaining, the group was introduced to our new website: www.pkscouncilonaging.com

This new version—I refer to it as version 2.0—could not have come this far without the foundational work undertaken by John and Anne Clarke—thank you both.

However, as their lives got busier and demands on the website were growing, I took it upon my self to learn something about web design.

I’m still counting on John and Anne’s participation in the tech space especially as we continue to videotape our forums—and possibly add brief videos of Hotel Alice and Spoondrift.

Ultimately, I was able to construct a new layout and add more content as well as engage a professional web designer (Alyce Meserve) for oversight and for my more detailed questions.

Please take a look and let me know what you think. Your comments are important. Our website and FB pages are now linked—there is value in synergy.
